INSOMNIPRESENCE (2019)

Insomnia affects around a third of the Great British public, which means that for every three people you pass on your morning commute, one of them will have suffered a sleepless night.

Having experienced a bout of insomnia I wanted to create a short series of images that speak of insomnia’s omnipresence. It becomes a dark cloud that hangs over you all day, reminding you that you didn’t sleep well last night and that you won’t sleep well again tonight. For sufferers, insomnia waits patiently in the wings for darkness to fall. Its presence always known, yet never seen. To the outside world, everything appears normal, as you carry on with your daily life.

This series brings insomnia’s presence to life through personification, creating a visible insomnia-monster. As a backdrop for this, I have created a magical world where day and night are visible at the same time; compressing time into one single moment while capturing multiple facets of everyday life.
