Artist Statement

HERE AND THERE (2019)

This short series was created to document my hopes and fears when returning to the UK after 10 years of life in the Middle East.

There comes a point in ex-pat life where the concept of home becomes blurred and complex. You realise that the place you left behind has been continually changing while you were gone, and can feel strangely unfamiliar. The place you chose lacks a personal legacy, and can sometimes feel incomplete. You belong to neither fully, yet both in part.

Identity and place are common discourses in photography, and I wondered how I, and my practice, might change relative to my new environment back in the UK.
