BETWEEN THE PORTALS OF THE GREAT PINES (2022-ongoing)

Between the Portals of the Great Pines was made in an ancient woodland in the Northeast of England called Elemore Woods. Forests and woods are inherently symbolic of time, where the past and the present intersect. This series speaks of womanhood and culture, exploring an unsuccessful journey into biological motherhood.

A central theme of femininity is explored through the woods' latent content and association with folktales, as well as literal representations of feminine symbols. Leaning into magic realism, otherwise ordinary scenes have been imbued with mystery and atmosphere by including ethereal elements. The familiarity of the woods is challenged, and we are reminded of the uncanny and the paradox of the known and the unfamiliar. This series occupies a qualifying position on the blurred boundary of reality and imagination.
